HERE COMES THE SUN! CARING FOR YOUR SKIN WHILE ENJOYING SUMMER
Now that we’re in the middle of summer, it’s time to discuss the sun’s effect on your skin, especially if you’re pregnant. The sun provides us with the essential Vitamin D. Prolonged darkness leads to symptoms of depression, while sunlight has positive effects resulting in more energy and a positive frame of mind – that nice golden tan makes us feel and look good! But you’ll want to keep in mind the following information when enjoying that summer gold. Pay close attention to #8 if you’re pregnant.
1) People with fair skin color, blue or green eyes, light hair, or multiple moles are at greater risk for sun-induced skin cancers.
2) The longer exposure to the sun especially during the strong UV light emissions (10AM-2PM) is associated with a far greater risk of skin cancer.
3) Ultraviolet A & B waves in sunlight are the skin injuring rays and can be blocked with sun screens. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is the way the screens are rated. The higher the SPF the greater the protection. The Center of Disease control recommends using a screen with a SPF of at least 30 or greater.
