Doctor, Will an Ablation cure my heavy periods?
An ablation is a minor surgical procedure that destroys the lining of the uterus in order to minimize heavy menstrual bleeding. Because of safer, faster, and easier to use ablation devices, we can perform ablations in our office. The procedure has significantly reduced the need for hysterectomy. It is safe (less than 1% complication rate) and if you are a good candidate it is an extremely effective procedure with over a 95% satisfaction rate .We use devices that burn the lining either with radiofrequency cautery (Nova Sure®) or a heated liquid filled balloon inserted into the uterus (Thermachoice®).
A menstrual period is a result of the uterine lining being shed. The procedure only ablates (destroys) the lining of the uterus. Other than providing a menstrual period, in all practicality the lining only provides an interface for nourishment during pregnancy, so ablating the lining only reduces or eliminates periods without affecting your hormonal balance or internal female organs.
