da Vinci Robotic surgery? The Wave of the Future
Today’s technology allows us to do more by doing less. What does that mean? In the past, most of the gynecologic surgery required making a large incision, either a “bikini cut” or a vertical midline incision. Most hysterectomies in the past were performed by making one of these incisions. Removal of large ovarian cysts or even severe cases of endometriosis required these larger incisions. Healing from these types of surgeries was longer, on average 6-8 weeks. Nowadays, we can make small incisions, typically less than ½ in and still complete the same surgeries. Patients can go home sooner and the recovery time is faster. da Vinci robotic surgery allows the surgeon to sit at a console and control the robotic arms. Due to the unique features of the da Vinci system, surgeons are able to gain more control of the instruments that traditional “straight stick” laparoscopy limits. Less pain and quicker recovery, discuss with your physician, if the da Vinci robotic approach is appropriate for you.
