Although there are mixed results from numerous studies, the majority of studies show that mothers who breastfeed regularly lose the weight they gained during pregnancy at a faster rate than those mothers that breastfeed part time or don’t breast feed at all. I have found that my breast feeding moms tend to lose their pregnancy weight easier. They also frequently point to their weight loss as a benefit of breast feeding. The one thing we do know is that women who breast feed exclusively burn between 400-600 additional calories per day by doing so. A conscientious patient has a significant advantage if she is careful with her diet. If she exclusively breastfeeds she can burn an extra 2800- 4200 calories per week. That is close to pound of weight loss per week!
